Product comparison · Software

Software, compared.

GrizCam leads on integration and trails on maturity. This page shows both as plainly.

GrizCam Desktop is a free workspace for acoustics (GrizEars) and camera traps (GrizEyes). It trains classifiers on foundation models without code, overlays collar tracks, and plays audio time-linked to camera captures — a combination none of the products below advertises. Competitors lead on almost every single axis: species breadth, bat auto-ID, measurement depth, data standards, price, and maturity. Every GrizCam surface is beta.

For a software-only buyer, GrizEars Free sits credibly alongside any third-party recorder.

Hardware comparison →Some features need the GrizCam device. The hardware page compares it with recorders and trail cameras.

How to read the cells

Yes
The vendor documents it, or a cited source shows it.
No
The vendor states it is absent, or it is structurally impossible.
Partial
It exists with a material limit, stated in the cell.
Paid
It exists, but only in a paid tier.
Not advertised
Nothing was found in the vendor's documentation — absence of evidence, never proof of absence.
Unverified
Sources conflict or are only secondary.
Spec
GrizCam hardware only: a design specification of a pre-production product, not independently verified.

Spec — the GrizCam device is pre-production: v1 in development, no ship date yet; specifications subject to change.

Which should I choose?

Bat researcher
Choose first
Song Meter Mini Bat 2, AudioMoth or Titley Chorus, with Kaleidoscope Pro.
Where GrizCam fits
GrizEars Free as an extra viewer or annotator for ultrasonic WAVs; GrizEars Pro to train a custom model on your own labeled calls.
When not to choose GrizCam
Regulatory or NABat bat ID; GrizCam hardware for most bat work (it records at up to 96 kHz — sounds up to about 48 kHz).

Kaleidoscope's validated regional classifiers and NABat alignment are decisive, and GrizCam ships no bat classifier. GrizEars can sit alongside Kaleidoscope for its maps, collar overlay or foundation-model training on locally labeled calls, but do not expect species ID out of the box.

Bird / ARU researcher on a budget
Choose first
AudioMoth or Micro 2 grids, with BirdNET, Perch, OpenSoundscape, Raven Workbench or Arbimon.
Where GrizCam fits
GrizEars Free: Perch + PNW-Cnet, ARU maps, clustering and indices without code; Pro only for no-code custom classifiers.
When not to choose GrizCam
Buying GrizCam devices as recorders; workflows that need Raven selection tables, Linux, or hosted multi-user storage.

This buyer gets the most from GrizCam software and the least from GrizCam hardware. GrizEars Free runs Perch on AudioMoth or Song Meter files and reads their GUANO and wamd GPS chunks onto a map. The money belongs in recorders.

Camera-trap ecologist
Choose first
Timelapse, AddaxAI, Agouti, TRAPPER or Wildlife Insights, with Reconyx hardware.
Where GrizCam fits
GrizEyes on a Mac, or when video and audio context matter; Free tier for manual review and COCO export.
When not to choose GrizCam
Camtrap DP publication, occupancy statistics on non-GrizCam data, free AI at scale, Windows-only labs already on Timelapse.

Weigh GrizEyes against AddaxAI, which runs the same detector and classifier free on Windows, Apple-Silicon Macs and Linux, and exports Camtrap DP.

Landowner / hunter
Choose first
A consumer cellular trail camera ($80–$220 + $0–$20/mo).
Where GrizCam fits
Only for large or poorly covered properties needing a 280° view with 360° motion detection, sound, or mesh/satellite reach — all Spec until v1 ships.
When not to choose GrizCam
Most buyers: price, availability, battery and phone convenience all favor trail cameras.

Almost always buy a cellular trail camera. GrizCam's case appears only when one device must replace several cameras and microphones across terrain without signal.

Remote infrastructure / security operator
Choose first
Hikvision or Reolink solar 4G for single sites; Verkada for enterprise.
Where GrizCam fits
Sites without cell coverage (satellite and mesh), gunshot bearing, smoke and gas sensing, multi-sensor evidence — all Spec until v1 ships.
When not to choose GrizCam
Anyone needing certified, shipping hardware now, phone push alerts, or bulk evidence export (Portal has none today).

Security operators gain the most from GrizCam's connectivity and sensing, but the Portal's email-only alerts and missing export are real gaps for evidence workflows.

Multi-sensor research program
Choose first
A WildTrax-style program with separate ARUs and cameras.
Where GrizCam fits
The strongest fit: co-located, time-linked audio + video + environment (Spec), collar integration in Desktop, single-unit bearing (Spec).
When not to choose GrizCam
Programs that need published validation, fixed procurement dates, or dense cheap grids.

Pairing GrizCam devices with Desktop gives co-located capture that WildTrax manages only as separate sensor streams. This buyer must still accept beta software and pre-production hardware with no published field validation.

Acoustic software

GrizEars is the broadest free desktop workspace here, not the deepest. Cornell is retiring Raven Pro 1.6 in favor of Raven Workbench, which is free, in beta, and trains detector-classifiers. Kaleidoscope Pro is now subscription-only, and its free Lite tier detects automatically only on Song Meter files. Avisoft-SASLab Pro is a perpetual, Windows-only license.

On price, GrizEars sits between free Workbench and paid Kaleidoscope: GrizEars Pro (Individual) is $500 in year one, then $100 a year, about $700 over three years; Kaleidoscope Pro is $399 a year, about $1,197 over three; Raven Workbench costs nothing in any year.

  • a Cornell's listings conflict: $50 non-profit or $100 commercial described as permanent, one-year licenses at $100/$200 marked sold out, and "$50–$800" on the product page.
  • b GrizCam Desktop requires an email one-time-code sign-in even for the Free tier.
  • c Direction of arrival works only on multi-channel GrizCam recordings, and estimates a bearing, not distance. It does not work on third-party recorder files. With 3 or more GPS-synced GrizCams, locating a sound in GrizCam Desktop is a Spec.
  • d The 16-bit ceiling comes from a Wildlife Acoustics FAQ and older documentation; it may differ in 5.9.

Where GrizCam leads

  • One workspace, several analyses. No other product reviewed puts no-code training on six foundation-model encoders, free embedding clustering, an ARU map, a collar-track overlay with dead reckoning, and camera-trap imagery in one app. Biologger overlay and single-array direction of arrival were not advertised by any competitor reviewed.
  • No code needed. Training sits beside the BirdNET GUI and Kaleidoscope's simple classifiers; it does not compete with notebook workflows such as perch-hoplite and OpenSoundscape, which need Python.
  • A more open free tier than Kaleidoscope Lite: GrizEars Free runs Perch on any recorder's WAV, MP3 or FLAC files, where Lite gates automatic detection to Song Meter files.

Where others lead

  • Raven: 70+ measurements, a detector-versus-truth comparison, acquisition up to 32 channels, a selection-table format R tools read as a de facto standard, two decades of teaching and citation, and now a free path through Workbench.
  • Kaleidoscope: bat auto-ID with regional classifier libraries, NABat grid-cell species selection, zero-crossing and GUANO support. Independent studies show any bat auto-ID needs expert vetting; GrizCam ships no bat classifier.
  • BirdNET and Perch win on species coverage, and GrizEars itself builds on Perch.
  • Arbimon offers free hosted storage with unlimited users, plus pattern matching and clustering.
  • WildTrax offers standardized, publishable data and the regional HawkEars model.
  • GrizEars' own gaps: no Linux build, no Intel Macs, no in-app BirdNET run, no Raven or Kaleidoscope table interop, indices on one recorder at a time, no published validation.

Parity

  • Local and offline processing: BirdNET, AviaNZ, OpenSoundscape and Kaleidoscope also run locally.
  • Ultrasound playback is common across the tools reviewed.
  • Perch-based species ID: BirdNET-Analyzer and BirdNET-Go now offer Perch v2 as an alternative model.
  • Free entry: about 83% of the 221 passive acoustic monitoring tools catalogued in a 2026 living review are free, so price is not a differentiator.

Camera-trap software

GrizEyes runs the same two models the rest of the field uses: MegaDetector v6 for detection, then SpeciesNet v4.0.1a for classification. That is also its weak spot: AI annotate is a Pro feature in GrizEyes, while AddaxAI runs those models free, offline, on Windows, Apple-Silicon macOS and Linux.

GrizEyes reads third-party trap folders and exports COCO JSON plus CSV; it does not export Camtrap DP, the 2024 TDWG standard. GrizCam Portal is a different product class: an operations console for GrizCam devices only, closer to a cellular trail-cam app than to Wildlife Insights, with no CSV or bundled download today.

Where GrizCam leads

  • Audio time-linked to every capture: GrizEyes reviews camera-trap photos and video together with the audio recorded around each capture. WildTrax handles cameras and ARUs under one organization, but as separate sensor workflows. This holds only for GrizCam deployments.
  • Video AI: Wildlife Insights cannot process camera-trap videos directly; GrizEyes samples video frames for AI.
  • Mac support: GrizEyes runs on Apple-Silicon macOS, which Windows-only Timelapse and Reconyx MapView do not.
  • Fleet operations in Portal: device-health telemetry, organization roles and device groups.
  • Private by default: Portal is private by default, while Wildlife Insights publishes data unless it is embargoed — a fit question for private landowners.

Where others lead

  • Species breadth: Wildlife Insights, SpeciesNet and AddaxAI's regional models.
  • Standards: Camtrap DP in Agouti, TRAPPER, Timelapse and AddaxAI.
  • Data entry: Timelapse's mature, customizable templates and episode grouping.
  • Price: free AI in AddaxAI, Timelapse and TrapTagger.
  • Platforms: AddaxAI runs on Linux.
  • Consumer convenience: Moultrie's Smart Tags are free to all Moultrie Mobile users, and the phone apps deliver instantly.
  • Portal gaps: no export, alerts by email only (no SMS or push), GrizCam hardware only.

Parity

  • "Your data never leaves your machine": AddaxAI and Timelapse already say this.
  • Map views: MapView, TRAPPER and the cellular apps all have one.
  • The AI models themselves: GrizEyes uses the same MegaDetector and SpeciesNet as AddaxAI.

* Spec — the GrizCam device is pre-production: v1 in development, no ship date yet; specifications subject to change.
