Grizzly Systems and Planet are piloting a sensor-fusion effort in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, pairing daily satellite imagery with GrizCam sensors on the ground. As part of the partnership, GrizCam Desktop software now connects to the user’s own Planet account, putting any detection on the GrizEyes map into the landscape as it looked that day. Yellowstone itself is protected, but the private lands between the park and the national forests carry the migration corridors, the trout water and the wildlife the region’s billion-dollar tourism economy runs on. This pilot puts measurement under that economy — so conservation on working land can be verified, funded and repeated.
Unlike many global sites, the GYE benefits from strong public-land cores; the challenge — and the opportunity — is aligning private lands, markets, and monitoring to sustain system-level biodiversity.
Landsat has photographed this ground since 1972. Every year is here, in two seasons: drag the divider to compare any two, or play a range as a timelapse.
Why the early years are red. The satellites of 1972–1983 could not see blue, so those years cannot be shown in true color. They are built from infrared instead, and living plants glow in infrared — so red is the forest, the crop and the irrigated pasture. Blue arrived in 1984, and the record turns natural color from there.
